Grooveshark said it recently worked with Google to remove illegal apps that were doing something even more controversial than the music streaming service -- letting users download music for free.

As a result, the Grooveshark app has been allowed back into the store.

The Google Play store unceremoniously restored the app today after it was pulled from the store more than a year ago. The online service lets users upload songs and then share them with other users, which upset some in the music industry.

The apps offering music downloads were illegally using Grooveshark's name, according to the company, which released this statement today:

"After working closely with Google to get rogue apps removed, we're delighted that the official Grooveshark app has been reinstated in the Android market. Grooveshark is dedicated to helping music fans search, discover and share music while pioneering new artist promotion, distribution and monetization techniques. We look forward to continuing to build a relationship with Android and leverage this fantastic platform for our partners."
